Ride the Central Coast: Cycling Through Arroyo Grande

Arroyo Grande might be an easy, scenic drive along the 101 from both the Bay Area and Southern California, but your car isn’t the only way to take in our stretch of the Central Coast. The region’s ocean vistas, rolling valleys, and winding backroads are also best experienced on two wheels.

With year-round sunshine, mild temperatures, and miles of uncrowded routes (both paved and unpaved), Arroyo Grande is a cyclist’s dream—whether you’re an ultra-fit road warrior or a laid-back e-bike cruiser. Use Arroyo Grande as your home base and enjoy some of the most affordable lodging and shopping on the coast before setting out on unforgettable rides that connect charming beach towns, inland preserves, and rugged hillsides.

Get Pumped at Village Cyclery

Right in the heart of the Arroyo Grande Village, Village Cyclery has everything you need to gear up for your next ride. From tune-ups to full restorations, they handle all types of bikes—roadsters, mountain, BMX, and e-bikes alike. Their friendly and knowledgeable staff are always up for a chat about local routes and can point you toward some of their favorite trails nearby. Speaking of which…

Spin from Shore to Shore: Grover Beach to Lopez Lake

Start your day with carb-loading and caffeinating on East Grand Avenue before pedaling west to Grover Beach. Soak in those Pacific views, then let the ocean breeze push you inland as you trace your way east toward Branch Mill Road and the steady climb to Lopez Lake.

This route covers roughly 30 miles round-trip—a solid challenge that’s as rewarding as it is scenic (and e-bike-friendly). Once you crest the hill and spot the Lopez Lake dam, take a breather and enjoy the sweeping views that made every pedal push worth it. From there, cross the bridge for an even grander perspective before coasting back down into the Village for a celebratory brew and well-earned lunch.

Hit the Dirt at James Way Habitat & Wildlife Preserve

Don’t let the short distance fool you! This 1.7-mile loop packs in a surprising amount of adventure. With quick climbs, shaded oak groves, and over 100 feet of elevation change, the James Way Preserve offers the perfect warm-up or post-lunch spin close to town. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, lizards, and the occasional snake along the way as you dust off from your ride through one of the Central Coast’s most compact ecosystems.

Pedal It Out in Pismo Preserve

Just two exits north of Arroyo Grande lies the Pismo Preserve, home to 11 miles of multi-use trails open to hikers, bikers, and even equestrians. The unpaved routes are smooth, well-maintained, and deliver one jaw-dropping ocean view after another. For a moderate ride, try the Discovery Trail, a 5-mile favorite among mountain bikers (just remember to share the narrow sections with hikers).
